One of the first things that all of us do after the initial setup of a new Android device is head over to the Google Play Store and look for the essential apps. In this segment, I have compiled a list of must-have applications for your new device. For ease of readability, I will be characterizing the apps based on their genre, an “other apps” segment will also be added at the end.
Android phones already come with some pre-installed Google apps that include Google, Drive, Photos, Play Store, Gmail, and YouTube. These apps

Social
Social connections are probably the prime function of a smartphone these days. Top apps include Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. Install social apps where that you actively use.
Messaging
This is another very important function of your device. Messaging apps help us connect with friends and relatives. These apps have become a part of our daily lives. Top Messaging apps are WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, Meet, and Skype. Meet and Skype can also be used to make voice calls.
You can find more options in Messaging apps HERE.
Security
In recent Android versions, security features have been upgraded a lot, so you don’t need many applications for this aspect. However, my personal favorite antivirus is Avast, which is free to use. I also use the two-step authentication process to make sure that my accounts are all safe and also to add an extra layer of authentication for security reasons. You can use the Google authenticator for the same, however, I use the Authy app for my Google, Facebook, and Twitter accounts.
Here is the list of Best App lock apps.
Camera
This would be different for different users depending on the level of control that they are looking for over the shots that they take. For auto shots, usually, the proprietary camera app is able to do the job well. For pro-level access, I would suggest the Camera FV-5 app if you are willing to pay 199 INR or Camera FV-5 Lite app for free use. The best gallery app that I use is QuickPic. The overall interface and sorting options are good. The application is very quick and responsive. Focus is a good alternative to the application.

Photo Editing
Snapseed is the best mobile application for you to make quick edits to your photos. The recent updates have also added better control options for those of you who are looking for controlling more aspects of your snaps. You can also try PicsArt mobile app. Here is a list of more photo editing apps that you can install if you don’t like Snapseed.
Games
I would not be suggesting many games here, would rather add links to separate dedicated articles about games. Different people like different games.

Music Apps
If you love listening to music, you need to install a good music app on your phone. Spotify is the best music app. Wynk, Gaana, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music are other good music apps for Android. If you already have Amazon’s Prime Membership, you can get access to an ads-free music experience on Amazon Music. Airtel users get access to Wynk.
Other Apps
This application is a good addition to your device. What it does is “pushes” notifications to your PC making sure that you don’t miss out on any notifications. While using it I found the application to be very helpful. WhatsApp messages that needed quick one-line replies could be replied to right from the PC, without the need for opening the phone. The universal copy-paste feature is also amazing. However, this feature is paid.
This is my go-to file explorer. The “analyze” feature is very helpful and tells you about the big files that are taking up space on your device.
This is a must-have app for you to have on your device. Basically, this is an all-encompassing app that allows you to view and edit PDF, PPT, Word, and Excel files right on your device.
This application is definitely the best news application that I usually head over to when I am short of time and want a quick update on the things that are happening around me. News in 60 words is definitely quite appealing.
Google News curates trending news from popular news sources and media publications. If you do not want to miss any important updates, Install Google News on the app.
