Xiaomi’s Mi Air Charge tech can wirelessly charge devices from a distance

Mi Air Charge

Xiaomi introduced a revolutionary wireless charging tech called “Mi Air Charge” technology. This can remotely charge multiple devices simultaneously over the air.

This tech uses space positioning and energy transmission to effectively charge devices within the range. Xiaomi has developed a charging pile that has five phase interference antennas to detect the location of the smartphone. Then the Pile uses a phase control array composed of 144 antennas to transmit millimeter-wide waves directly to the phone through beamforming.

Smartphones should pack miniaturized antenna array with built-in “beacon antenna” and “receiving antenna array”. Beacon antenna broadcasts position information and receiving antenna array with 14 antennas converts the millimeter wave signal into electric energy through the rectifier circuit.

Xiaomi says that this tech is capable of 5-watt remote charging within a radius of several meters. Physical obstacles also do not reduce the charging efficiency.

This kind of charging tech has been rumored for quite some time. We saw a few prototypes but finally, something is ready to launch for consumers. Xiaomi has confirmed that Mi Air Charge is just a tech demo at this stage. So, it will still take months to be available. This tech will have to pass health-related certifications. There will surely be health concerns.

Xiaomi has been into charging tech innovations for the past few months. The company recently introduced 80W wireless charging and 120W wired charging.
