Chinese smartphone maker Vivo has announced a new RGBW camera sensor that boasts to improve smartphone photography experience.

Vivo didn’t offer many details and sensor characteristics. The company just provided us the comparison data. The sensor can collect 160% more light than a conventional RGGB-equipped sensor. It also captures 15% more light than the Huawei-used RYYB sensors.

Theoretically, this sensor should be the best camera sensor in all lighting conditions. Vivo also claims that they didn’t use any existing technology and everything used in this sensor was created by the minds of its engineers.

The camera sensor should be available in Vivo smartphones by the second half of 2021. We can expect Vivo to showcase the camera capabilities of this sensor in upcoming tech shows.

This isn’t the first time Vivo has tried to innovate the smartphone camera. The company is also known for a periscope camera that we saw in Vivo X30 Pro and Vivo X50 Pro, and X50 Pro + smartphones.

Vivo also announced a partnership with National Geographic for launching the Vision+ Mobile Photography Awards. Smartphone users will be able to submit their photos to win the award.
