Apple updates iMac Lineup with 9th-Gen Intel Chips, Radeon Pro Vega Graphics

Apple has updated its 4K and 5K iMac models with newer 9th-Gen Intel CPUs and AMD Vega GPUs. The 9th gen. CPU is only available on the highest-end 5K model.

After the refresh, the 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display will come in two variants with 8th gen. 3.6GHz quad-core Core i3 or 8th gen. 3.0GHz 6-core Core i5. If you want, both can be configured with 8th gen. 3.2GHz 6-core Core i7.

4K model also gets Radeon Pro 555X with 2GB GDDR5 on the base model and Radeon Pro 560X with 4GB GDDR5 on the higher-end model. The high-end model can also be configured with Radeon Pro Vega 20 with 4GB HBM2.

The 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display will have three variants with 8th gen. 3.0GHz 6-core Core i5, 8th gen. 3.1GHz 6-core Core i5, and 9th gen. 3.7GHz 6-core Core i5. The second and third models can also be configured with a 9th gen. 3.6GHz 8-core Core i9 if you want.

The 5K models get Radeon Pro 57X with 4GB GDDR5 on the base model. The mod model gets Radeon Pro 575X with 4GB GDDR5 whole the higher-end model gets Radeon Pro 580X with 8GB GDDR5. If you want, the higher end model can also be configured with Radeon Pro Vega 48 with 8GB HBM2.

By default, you get the 8GB 2666MHz memory in all five models. The 4K models can be configured either 16GB or 32GB memory options. The base and mid 5K model can also be configured with 16GB or 32GB memory but the higher-end 5K model can be configured in 64GB as well.

Apple has also added a new tier for the iMac Pro that uses Intel’s Xeon-W line of processors. Now it can be configured with up to 256GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory. But users will have to pay an extra $5200 above the cost of the default 32 GB configuration. The iMac Pro has not received any spec boost (except the momory) because Intel has yet to release the next generation Xeon W-series processors.

The 21.5-inch iMac with Retina 4K display starts at $1,299 and the 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display starts at $1,799.
