How to find vehicle owner’s name by vehicle’s registration number

Check Vehicle Owner Details By Registration Number

There could be several scenarios when you actually have the registration number of a vehicle and want to know the owner of it. It could be a hit and run case, someone is selling an old vehicle to you, or anything else. If you know the registration number, you can actually get the owner’s detail. There are several ways of getting vehicle owners’ information online. In this article, I will tell you how you can find the owner’s information just by using the vehicle’s registration number.

From different online sources, you get these key information about a vehicle.

  • Owner Name
  • Registration Date
  • Registration Number
  • Vehicle Class or Type
  • Fuel Type
  • Road Tax Details
  • Insurance Expiry Date
  • Emission Norms Details
  • Status of the Registration Certificate
  • Manufacturer and Model Name
  • Fitness or Registration Expiry Date
  • Chassis and Engine Number (Partially Visible)
  • Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) Expiry Date.

All the methods I am adding below work for Indian vehicles only.

  1. By using the government’s VAHAN portal

India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has made an official website where you can get the data of all the vehicles running across the country. This website lets you get the information of a vehicle owner just by entering the registration number. All you need is to create an account by using your phone number and email address. After creating an account, you can search for information about any vehicle using the registration number.

This portal shows the owner’s name (but partial), registration date, fitness registration, insurance validity, model name, and RTO detail. It works fine for both 2 wheelers and 4 wheeler vehicles. Since the website shows partial details of the owner’s name, you don’t exactly get the vehicle owner’s name.

This is the reason I recommend some other websites that actually tell you the exact information you need about the vehicle owner.

Visit Website

2. CarInfo app

CarInfo app

CarInfo is an excellent app that lets you search vehicle owner’s details, active challans, DL search, and more. This app lets you search RC data using the vehicle’s registration number. Unlike the VAHAN portal, it shows the full information including the vehicle owner’s name. So, this app is the best option for anyone who wants to trace the vehicle owner’s name by vehicle number. This app also works for both 4 wheelers and 2 wheelers. So don’t judge it by name. I personally use this app to check challan for my cars from time to time. It works great.

This app also includes profile management where you can download and keep your vehicle’s RC and DL for emergencies. In case you forget the actual document at home, show the docs downloaded on this app. It also doesn’t need a signup for any services it offers. Just download and search information.

Carinfo app is free to download and is available for both Android and iOS. The app supports ads that may irritate you but there is no way to remove ads.

Download Android iOS

3. By Sending an SMS

VAHAN portal also offers an SMS-based service to get the vehicle owner’s name, RTO details, make and model, RC/FC expiry, insurance details just by sending an SMS.

Step 1: Enter VAHAN Vehicle Registration Number. (Example: VAHAN DL01ADxxxx)

Step 2: Send the SMS to 7738299899.

You get an SMS containing information about the vehicle. The information includes the vehicle owner’s name, RTO details, make and model, RC/FC expiry, insurance details, etc.

Wrap Up

Now you know how to trace vehicle owner name by vehicle number. I have given three different methods but recommend the Carinfo app. This app works great and offers a lot more features than just searching car owners’ information. This app also doesn’t require any signup. If you are not comfortable with giving your information, download the Carinfo app.
