ProtonMail shared the IP address of a French user with Swiss authorities

ProtonMail is a hosted email service that promises end-to-end encrypted communications and a no-log policy. It is also one of the most secure email services available on the internet. Now the company has fallen into controversy after it provided user data to Swiss authorities. This also led to the arrest of a climate change activist in France.

It seems the company was forced to log IP addresses and then share them with authorities.

The company was legally forced to log the IP address and share it with authorities. ProtonMail founder and CEO Andy Yen explains that it only started logging the specific users’ IP addresses after it was legally forced to do so by Swiss authorities.

Now users who trust ProtonMail for its encryption, privacy, and autonomy are worried. Proton also offers a VPN service of its own. Now users are worried if the company can also log VPN users’ IP addresses.
