Screenshots in Stories
Instagram Stories is one of the most popular features on the platform. If you post a Story, you know who saw it. But there is no way to know who captured the screenshot of it.
Back in 2018. The company experimented with notifying users when someone took a screenshot of their story. When users took screenshots, it used to show a small starburst icon next to the name in the viewer’s list. So, you knew who took a screenshot of the Story. However, the company dropped the plan to roll out the feature after negative feedback from users. Right now, the app doesn’t notify about Stories screenshots.
Screenshots in Posts
If you capture screenshots of a regular post including photos, videos, or carousels. It won’t send a screenshot notification to the creator or the person who posted it. You can take screenshots of posts shared in the main feed without worrying about being alerted.
Screenshots in Direct Messages (DMs)
Instagram doesn’t notify users when you screenshot conversions in DM. However, there’s an exception when it comes to disappearing photos and videos. If you screenshot a disappearing photo or video in a DM, Instagram will notify the sender. The app will show a circular notification icon next to your name in the message thread. You can capture screenshots of regular text messages, shared photos, and videos in DM and the app won’t notify the other person.
Screenshots in Notes
Instagram also has a Notes feature that was added back in 2023. If someone captures screenshots of your Notes, the app won’t notify you about it.
Wrap Up
Instagram doesn’t notify about screenshots for normal posts, Stories, or regular messages. So, you don’t need to worry while capturing the screenshots. However, the platform does notify users if they take a screenshots of disappearing photos or videos sent via direct message. While Instagram’s policies may allow you to take screenshots in most cases without notifications, it is important to respect the privacy of other users on the platform.
