Rear camera setup

  • 16 megapixels CMOS Sensor with 5 megapixels secondary sensor
  • Soft Light Flash

Front camera setup

  • 16-megapixel front camera with Soft light flash and f/2.2 aperture

Camera app is same with all the same options. You have camera modes including HDR, Portrait, Landscape, Spores and more. There are also few camera effects that only work with automatic mode. You also see options for Beauty mode and portrait mode located at the top of the app.

Tapping on gear icon opens different options to customize. Here, you have option to change ISO, Exposure, White balance but you will miss the full featured PRO Mode.

The camera app needs work. Sometimes it take lot of time to process the images. I also faced an issue with camera. Sometimes it tapping on camera icon doesn’t open the camera and it displays an error message. I am not sure if this error is device specific or other people are also facing the same issue.

Camera performance

With better camera hardware and processing, the camera now perform better. You get excellent shots in daylight. All photos are balanced with good details and nice color accuracy. Landscape shots turn out to be really good. HDR mode works good as well. In portrait shot, edge detection has been improved. So, portrait shots are better than before.

Low light photos are not that great but slightly better than the base variant of Zenfone Max Pro M1. You see noise depending on the light around. Flash works well and helps in capturing better photos when there is very poor light around. I still feel that low light processing needs work.

Front camera now works better and captures good shots. You also have portrait shot option in front camera as well and it also perform well. It is purely on software based, edge detection still needs improvements. Its low light performance is also better. While there is considerable amount of noise, photos are better than before. You also have front flash to help you in low light

Here are the samples to check. See these samples and decide. As I have uploaded the samples on our server, server may have significant impact on image quality.

Video recording works well and you can record up to 4K videos from the rear camera. There is no EIS, so videos are shaky and you need a gimble or tripod for better videos. Autofocus works good and it quickly focuses on a new object at front. The front camera recording quality is also good. Its noise cancellation works well, so it records crisp audio. I will upload a camera review video with recording sample and more camera samples on our YouTube channel soon.

Final Words

Now after this upgraded variant, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has become one of the best camera phone under Rs. 15000. Both rear and front camera perform well and capture quality shots. I am telling everything considering the phone is priced at Rs. 15000. Making it clear is important because many people start comparing camera of a budget phone with the camera of a high-end phone that doesn’t make sense. And I don’t want to reply to those comments.

Not just the best camera phone, but it has also become the best phone with its longer battery life, good performance and awesome display.

If you are searching for a good phone under Rs. 15000, this phone is for you. Go and get it.
