1. Screen Size
Tablets are available in various screen sizes. First of all, you need to decide the screen size of the tablet you are comfortable with. You think 10 inch tablets are big enough for you to carry, you can consider 7 inch tablets. But 10 inch tablets are best if you want it for some typing work or gaming. So decide by yourself what you need.
If you want tablet for movies and gaming, always search for tablets with HD or Full HD display.

2. Operating system
Operating system is also an important thing which must be taken care while buying a tablet. It does not matter which tablet you are buying. But always try to buy tablet with latest mobile operating system. For example, I will go for Android Jelly bean. If Jelly bean is not possible, then for Android ICS. Same for iOS, go for iPad with latest iOS.
Updated version tablets will support all nice apps and will have better features.
3. Connectivity Features
You also need to know about connectivity features of tablet and then see which suits you. If you live in a place where Wi-Fi network is easily available, you can also select Wi-Fi tablet. In case you live in a better 3G network area try to buy a 3G tablet. If 3G not available, search for tablet that supports external dongle for connectivity. If you do not have Wi-Fi access near your place, it is not worth to buy a wi-fi only tablet.
4. RAM and Storage
These are also important part of the tablets. To consider this, you need to know the usage of your tablet. If you want to play games and watch HD videos, you need to purchase tablet with high storage RAM. For gaming you must have at least 512 MB RAM. But try to have 1 GB. For normal usage, 256 MB is also enough. But i will recommend tablet with RAM at least 512 MB RAM.
Think how much storage you need to have in tablet. And tablet must have microSD card for expansion.
These are some basic things which must be considered before buying a tablet. There are some other facts which may see but these mentioned above are most important.
