At INK conference, WhatsApp’s Business head Neeraj Arora confirmed that WhatsApp has more than 70 million active users in India. Active users are those who engage with the app at leas once a month. He also said that total user base of this popular messaging service is now more than 600 million.
With 70 million users, India is around the tenth of its overall users. So, we can say that India is one of the important markets for the company. Arora also mentioned that company wants to connect billions of people in India and Brazil through WhatsApp in next few years. He said that company mainly focuses on user experience and not on revenue. This is the main reason it was able to grab millions of users.
India is one of the biggest market for WhatsApp is ahead of all its competitors in India. Its next best competitor Hike only has around 35 million registered users (as of Aug 2014). If we talk about other key players, Line has 30 million and Viber has around 25 million users in India. It is also worth to note that WhatsApp report active members while other rivals give registered users number.
Recently it was also rumoured that WhatsApp is working on free voice calling feature. After the addition of this feature, WhatsApp’s popularity is expected to grow with faster rate.
