Twitter has pulled back the option to send direct message to anyone. Now, users can end direct messages only to their followers. The check box opt in feature fond in account settings has also been removed.

When Twitter was asked about the reason of this backtrack, it pointed to the older blog post from September. In this blog post, company explains how it constantly experiments with product to improve it.

“We also experiment with features that may never be released to everyone who uses Twitter. Those experiments are perhaps even more valuable because they help us decide what not to do –– which is important as we work to keep Twitter simple while improving the user experience. Ultimately, our goal is to learn and keep making the product better; we aren’t necessarily looking to launch all of the experiments we roll out,” Twitter said in that blog post.

In coming month, Twitter is reportedly planning to launch new standalone direct-messaging app to fight with other rival apps. But we have no information about exact time frame about the app.
