Zoho to take on OpenAI with its own Large Language Model project

Zoho

As per reports, Indian SaasS company Zoho is working on its own large language model (LLM) similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s PaLM 2. The project is being led by Zoho’s founder Sridhar Vembu with the active involvement of Zoho’s R&D team.

LLM is an advanced deep learning model that is trained to understand and generate text in the same way a human does. Zoho also develops and maintains data centers for its software and applications. So, it also has the necessary infrastructure for LLM. They also require a huge amount of capital and talented engineers for developing ChatGPT-like LLM.

Zoho has already integrated chatGPT in 13 of its applications for its users. But the company also decided to make its own proprietary large language model for integrating into its applications.

It is worth noting that OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman was recently in India. During his India visit, he claimed that India’s chances of building a ChatGPT-like LLM were ‘hopeless.’ He was not actually wrong because making a ChatGPT-like LLM requires big infrastructure and huge investment. India has a big pool of talented engineers but it is not easy to raise huge funds for a LLM when OpenAI and Google have already unveiled their working models. Meta is also doing the same thing.

It seems Zoho has accepted the challenge and wants to give it a try. Zoho offers several SaaS software for businesses. Zoho software and applications are used by more than 90 million users across over 600,000 businesses.
