Google has just announced to bring its Siri or Alexa rival Google Assistant to TV screens. Google Assistant will be coming to supported Android Televisions and set-top boxes in coming months.

Google Assistant will only be supported if the device runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow or higher. Google has also confirmed the name of some hardware that will get the Google Assistant.

These are:

  • AirTV Player
  • All Android TV televisions in the United States on Android 6.0 or Android 7.0 (including Sony Bravia and Sharp Aquos lines)
  • Nvidia Shield
  • Xiaomi Mi Box

According to Google, Nvidia Shield will be the first of these devices to get hands-free Google Assistant experience. You will be able to just speak “OK Google” to activate and use it.

Not all devices will use Google Assistant in the same way. In some of the supported devices, you will also be needing a voice remote to use it.

It is nice to see Google Assistant coming for more devices. Google has still to do lots of work to catch the Alexa. Now we are seeing many devices coming with Alexa built-in. These devices are from smart speakers to refrigerators. So, Google should think about it seriously before Alexa starts ruling the market.
