Microsoft Patents New Eye-Tracking Keyboard Input Method

Microsoft has filed a new patent for the technology which lets users input in a text box using eye-tracking software. Imagine you are typing without using your hands and just by looking at letters you want to use. If it comes to reality, it will really make a big difference for those who are unable to use his/her hands.

Typing via Eye-tracking technology is in its early phase and is not going to be in real in next few years. But Microsoft wants to make this as soon as it can. Microsoft’s patent said that the options available today are slow and requires practice on a specific keyboard position to put hands and then type fast. This new solution can make the process fast by combining pattern recognition and sample gathering.

The idea behind this is much similar to Swipe-based keyboard we use today. But instead of tracking the finger motion, it will track movements of eyes. When you move your eyes from key to key, device’s camera will record its gaze and with a little algorithm, Microsoft will try to predict what key you were looking at.

This new device can also be a Google Glass like head mounted device which will be closer to your eyes where it can track eye-balls directly. But on Patent description, Microsoft talked about all kind of devices like desktop, mobile and tablets. On desktop and smartphone, angle of looking at the device will not be same all the time. I am not sure how it will predict right in those condition. But I am also very interested in seeing this technology working in next few years.
