What is Emergency SOS on iPhone?
Emergency SOS is a built-in safety feature that allows users to quickly contact emergency services by pressing the side button and volume button simultaneously (or by rapidly pressing the side button five times on older models). Once activated, your iPhone can call emergency services and notify your emergency contacts, sending them your current location.
Key Features of Emergency SOS:
Emergency SOS is a nice option that lets you access local emergency services without unlocking your iPhone. If you set up the feature properly, your emergency contacts receive a message with your location. After the call, if your location changes, your emergency contacts will receive an update.
While this feature is extremely helpful in emergencies, some people may accidentally trigger it. Here’s how to prevent that from happening.
How to Turn Off Emergency SOS on iPhone
If you frequently trigger Emergency SOS by mistake, you can either turn it off completely or adjust its settings to avoid accidental activation. Follow these steps to disable or modify Emergency SOS on your iPhone.
Steps to Turn Off Emergency SOS:
Open the Settings App on your iPhone. Scroll until you find Emergency SOS. In the Emergency SOS settings, you will see an option Call with Hold and Release. If this is enabled, pressing and holding the side button and one of the volume buttons will activate Emergency SOS. Toggle the switch to the off position to disable this feature.
Another option in the settings is Call with 5 Presses. If this is enabled, rapidly pressing the side button five times will activate Emergency SOS. Toggle this off if you don’t want to enable the Emergency SOS feature by pressing the side button three times.
Note: in India, you see Call with 3 Presses option in place of Call with 5 Presses.
If you don’t want to turn off Emergency SOS entirely but are concerned about accidental activations, consider tweaking the settings. Leave ‘Call with Hold and Release’ Disabled. This prevents accidentally calling emergency services when you press the side button and volume button simultaneously. Enable ‘Countdown Sound.’ Having a loud sound play before the emergency call will notify you, allowing you to cancel it before it completes.
By adjusting these settings, you can keep the Emergency SOS feature active for genuine emergencies while reducing the chance of accidental activation.
