Reliance Jio has brought back its Jio Prime membership in India, but the service has returned with a very different purpose. Instead of being primarily a loyalty programme, the new Jio Prime is designed to protect customers from future tariff hikes.

Jio users can pay a one-time fee of ₹300 to become Prime members and lock the prices of eligible recharge plans against future tariff revisions. The price protection is available until September 5, 2027. This means that if Jio increases the price of an eligible plan during this period, Prime members can continue using that plan at the protected price.

The membership is available to existing Jio prepaid and postpaid customers and does not require users to get a new SIM or change their mobile number. Jio Prime enrollment is scheduled to open on August 20 through the MyJio app, Jio.com, Jio Stores and partner stores.

It is important to understand that the ₹300 membership fee is separate from the cost of the mobile recharge. Users still have to pay for their regular plans. The benefit is that the price of eligible plans is protected. This makes Jio Prime more like a price-lock service than a conventional subscription.

The protection is interesting because customers do not have to commit to a single recharge plan. Reports indicate that Prime members can switch between eligible plans while retaining the price-protection benefit.

Jio has set September 5, 2027, as the hard end date for the current price protection. It is therefore better to think of the offer as protection until a fixed date rather than assuming that every customer will necessarily get exactly 12 months from the day they purchase Prime.

Price protection is the main reason to consider the new Jio Prime, but Jio is offering several additional benefits. Prime members can get a ₹300 cashback voucher when they take a new JioHome or JioPC connection. Another ₹300 cashback voucher is available when they add a new Jio SIM connection for a friend or family member. This gives members access to up to ₹600 in vouchers, although these are tied to the respective eligible transactions and should not be treated as ₹600 of unconditional cash.

Jio Prime members will also receive early access to selected new Jio products, services and trials. The company has said that more benefits could be added during the membership period.

Prime subscribers will additionally get priority customer support through a dedicated service channel.

The timing of the announcement is interesting. Jio has introduced price protection at a time when India’s telecom industry is moving towards higher tariffs and better revenue per customer. Airtel has recently changed its prepaid portfolio, while analysts have been expecting further tariff revisions across the industry.

Jio Prime could therefore work in two ways.

For customers, it provides some certainty. Paying ₹300 now could save more than that amount if Jio raises the prices of the plans they regularly use.

For Jio, the programme creates another reason for customers to stay on its network. A user who has paid for price protection may be less willing to move to another operator if tariffs rise across the market. It also gives Jio an additional source of revenue from its existing subscriber base while encouraging customers to remain within its wider ecosystem.

Is Jio Prime worth ₹300?

That depends on whether Jio increases tariffs during the protection period and how much the increase affects the plans you use. If Jio does not raise prices, the price-lock benefit may not save you any money. If there is a significant tariff hike, however, the ₹300 membership fee could pay for itself relatively quickly.

The extra vouchers may also improve the value of the membership for customers who already plan to add a JioHome, JioPC or another Jio SIM connection.
