Reliance Jio has reached a major milestone with 268 million 5G users as of March 2026. This is the largest 5G user base in India and also one of the fastest large-scale 5G rollouts globally. The company added around 15 million users in a single quarter, up from 253 million in Q3 FY26.
This growth is backed by aggressive network expansion and a clear strategy. Reliance Industries confirmed in its Q4 FY26 report that 5G now accounts for 55 percent of Jio’s total wireless traffic. This is important because it shows users are not just switching to 5G, they are actively using it for data-heavy tasks like streaming, gaming, and cloud services.
Jio’s total wireless subscriber base has already crossed 500 million, which makes it the largest telecom operator outside China. With more than half of its traffic now on 5G, the company is moving faster than expected in shifting users from 4G to next-generation networks.
When we look at the broader market, Jio’s execution teaches important business lessons. Its closest rival, Bharti Airtel, has also rolled out 5G across major cities and towns, but it has not shared a comparable 5G user number at this scale. Airtel has focused more on premium users and network quality, while Jio has taken a mass adoption approach by pushing affordable plans and wide coverage.
Another key factor behind Jio’s growth is device availability. The Indian smartphone market is now full of affordable 5G phones, which is helping users upgrade faster. However, Jio still controls access in a limited way. Right now, 5G benefits are mainly available to users on plans with 2GB daily data or higher. This ensures higher revenue per user while gradually shifting the base.
Looking ahead, growth will continue but at a slower pace. Most early adopters have already upgraded, so future gains will depend on rural expansion and users moving from older 4G devices. Still, the current numbers clearly show that Jio has built a strong lead in India’s 5G race.
