Snapchat is changing the way people use chats and streaks on the platform. The company has announced two major features: Infinite Retention and Group Streaks. These features aim at giving users more control and flexibility in how they communicate.
Until now, chats on Snapchat were designed to disappear by default after being viewed or within 24 hours. This is the feature that made Snapchat different from other social media platforms. With the new Infinite Retention option, users will now be able to save chats forever. The feature can be turned on for individual conversations, and all participants get a notification whenever the setting is changed. This ensures transparency while giving users the ability to keep important conversations, something many have been asking for.
Another major update is Group Streaks. Traditionally, streaks were a one-to-one feature that kept track of how many days two people exchanged Snaps. With Group Streaks, every Snap shared contributes to a collective counter. It allows groups of friends to celebrate their activity together. The streak continues as long as most members participate. This makes it easier to maintain. Just like regular streaks, Group Streaks are private, optional, and can be restored within a week if they break.
These updates mark a big shift for Snapchat. Infinite Retention changes the app’s original philosophy of temporary conversations. While disappearing messages made Snapchat popular among young users, many people have long wanted an option to save meaningful chats. This move brings Snapchat closer to messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage.
Group Streaks could make Snapchat even more engaging. Streaks have always been one of the most addictive features of the app, encouraging daily activity. By extending it to groups, Snapchat may boost overall engagement, especially among friend circles and school or college communities. It is also likely to spark competition with apps like Instagram, which has been testing its own “friendship tracking” features.
While Infinite Retention will be welcomed by many, some users may worry that it takes away the privacy-first nature of Snapchat. However, the app has made sure that everyone is notified when retention settings are changed, which could help maintain trust. Over time, we might also see Snapchat expand retention settings with more options, like automatic clean-up after a set period.
