A month after launching its ChatGPT-powered chatbot AI in Bing, Microsoft confirmed that Bing has now crossed 100 million daily active users. Bing still has a small and single digit market share, but the growth is impressive.

The company has also confirmed that of all the currently active users, roughly one-third are new to Bing. Bing is also seeing growing engagement and more daily searches. Microsoft is seeing three chats per session and recorded over 45 million chats since the release of the new Bing.

“We see this appeal of the new Bing as a validation of our view that search is due for a reinvention and of the unique value proposition of combining Search + Answers + Chat + Creation in one experience,” the VP said.

Microsoft claims there are two primary factors that are driving more people to Bing. First is the Edge’s growth in usage and second is the Prometheus AI model that made Bing’s search results more relevant. So, people are now trying Bing for searching the web.

Soon after the launch of the new Bing, the Bing app saw a surge in U.S. App Store listing and became the 12th in all free iPhone apps and Edge was ranked as the number 3 Utility app. The Bing app saw a 10x increase in new downloads. So, I was not surprised after Microsoft announced the surge in Bing’s active userbase.

With the integration of an AI chatbot, Microsoft has made Bing a more powerful and interesting search engine. Google is also planning to launch its chat AI called Bard but Microsoft has a first-mover advantage. So, it will be interesting to see how Bing manages to compete against Google which is currently enjoying the majority of the search engine market share.

As per Statcounter, Google has 93.37% search engine market share globally in the month of February and Bing only has 2.81%. If we look at browser market share, Edge has only a 4.28% market share and Chrome enjoyed a 65.76% market share in February 2023. Statcounter reports also don’t show any considerable surge in the usage of Edge and Bing.
