Qualcomm announced its latest top-end chip Snapdragon 835 back in November 2016. At CES 2017, the company has revealed more details. This chip is a derivative of Snapdragon 821 found in most of the flagship phones today. It claims to offer 27 percent more performance or consume 40 percent less power.

The chip is built on Samsung’s new 10nm manufacturing process that has enabled a 30 percent reduction in size. It has the 3-billion-transistor chip to use 40 percent less power and offer 27 percent more power. This chip carries Kryo 280 branding.

Qualcomm has upped the amount of L2 cache. Now 2 MB is available for high-performance cores and smaller cores come with 1 MB of L2 cache. This setup will reduce the amount of calls being made to main memory while processing information. It will not just increase the performance but will surely reduce the power consumption. Qualcomm also claims that around 80% of smartphone’s processing will be done only by low-power cores.

It pairs with Adreno 540 for improved graphics performance. This GPU is 25 percent faster at 3D graphics and supports 60 times more display colors. Its display and video processing capabilities have been upgraded to support 10-bit colors. It also supports six degrees of freedom positioning The company also claims a 20 percent reduction in motion tracking latency.

Adreno 540 supportDirectX 12, OpenGL ES 3.2, OpenCL 2.0, Vulkan graphics APIs and Google DayDream VR platform.

This chip also brought improvements in camera capabilities. Its Spectra ISP still supports Qualcomm’s Clear Sight technology for color and monochrome sensor combinations to provide better contrast. Now it brings Snapdragon Optical Zoom module that brings 2x optical zoom capabilities and an improved 10x digital zoom to the platform. The spectra is a 14-bit dual ISP setup that supports up to dual 16MP cameras or a single 32MP sensor.

Spectra ISP support

It includes support for phase detection autofocus using dual photodiode imaging sensors, improved video stabilization and rolling shutter correction for 4K video. It also carries integrated capability to create high dynamic range images.

It also aims to provide better multimedia experience. It has improved its Aqstic audio codec for better audio experience. Aqstic plays back 24-bit/192kHz files. Now it also supports DSP files too. It also brings hardware improvements for better sound playback. It also supports audiophile grade DAC with overkill 32-bit/384kHz playback capabilities.

This chipset is packed with Quick Charge 4.0 that is 20% faster and up to 30% more efficient that Quick Charge 3.0. It will support USB-C Power Delivery. Users will receive up to 5 hours of battery life from just 5 minutes of charge with the new standard. It also features a cable quality detector. So, it will not send high currents over USB cables that don’t make the cut.

Now the SoC comes with Qualcomm’s latest X16 LTE modem that is capable of offering 1 Gbps download speed. This is not just about faster video and images download, it should also offer up to 5 times typical speed improvement over Cat 4 modems. It is the first Qualcomm processor to come with an integrated 802.11ac modem. In this way, it will save motherboard space.

The Snapdragon 835 is in production. So, we can expect devices with Snapdragon 835 starting from the first half of 2017.
