Why should you stop using smartphone in bed before sleeping?

If you are reading this, you are one of those people who check their phone soon after waking up and before sleeping. When you leave for the bed after shutting down the laptop, you still spend hours with smartphone before actually sleeping. Now days people are so addicted to phone that even if they wake up in the middle of the night, they check notifications in their smartphone before continue their sleep. Recent study from Bank of America claims that 71% of us sleep with our phones.

But this is bad for your health and you should stop doing this.

Researchers have found that using smartphone affects the production of hormone which tells our body to sleep. Although, this research is around 6 months old but worth sharing. The blue-and-white light of phones, laptops or other gadgets at night prevents our brains from releasing melatonin hormone. This light fools the brain into thinking that it is day time. This hormone is responsible for our sleeping cycle. This is why people usually sleep late.

If you stop using any kind of gadget one hour before you go to bed, you can easily fall asleep in time. But, I know how hard it is to leave your phone for one hour.

Here, I also want to add one important point. This blue-and-white light is not the primary reason why you are sleeping late. It is actually your addiction. Yes, smartphone’s display light affects hormone and it is preventing you from sleeping. But you are also forcing yourself to be with phone all the time because of your addiction. And smartphone is the addiction. If somehow you stop thinking about your phone and notification, you can sleep well.

All time connected devices are the primary reason of this addiction. Even if there is no new notification tone, we still check to see if there is a notification. I have seen people just unlocking phone, checking the display and then locking it again. It is now habit of most of the people.

Sleep and rest are very important for healthy life. If you want to be healthy, you must try to keep a distance from your smartphone in night. Avoid keeping this with you in bed. This is the best thing you can do for a healthy sleep. Not just sleep, you will become more social and can live happy life in real world.
