Apple is preparing to launch its next-generation iPhone on October 4. According to AllThingsD, the plan is for Apple’s new CEO, Tim Cook, to lead the event. However, the report also said Apple could still change its plans at any time.
Tim Cook, who is 50, took over as CEO last month after Steve Jobs stepped down due to health issues. Jobs, the co-founder of Apple, had been the face of almost every big product launch, including the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Mac.
AllThingsD reports that the iPhone 5 will be available in the market within a few weeks after the announcement. Apple last released the iPhone 4 in June 2010, and just last quarter, the company sold over 20 million units.
It will be interesting to see if Steve Jobs makes an appearance at the launch. That will likely depend on his health, as Jobs has battled serious health issues in recent years, including pancreatic cancer and a liver transplant.
This will be Tim Cook’s first major product launch as CEO, and the pressure will be high. Apple shares are already trading at record highs, closing at $419.13 on Wednesday.
