Google has officially launched the native Gemini app for macOS. This is the first time Gemini is available as a proper desktop app instead of just web or mobile. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced this launch via a post on X.
Pichai revealed that the initial version of the Gemini Mac app was built very quickly. The team worked with Antigravity and turned the idea into a native Swift app prototype in just a few days.
This is interesting because it shows how fast development is moving with AI tools and modern frameworks. Building a desktop app usually takes weeks or even months. But in this case, the team managed to get a working prototype ready in days.
Gemini app for Mac is designed to stay close to your workflow. You can open it anytime using a simple keyboard shortcut, Option + Space, without switching tabs or apps. This makes it easier to get quick help while working.
One of the key features is screen sharing for better context. You can share any window or file directly with Gemini and ask questions based on what you see. For example, you can open a chart or document and ask for a summary or key insights. This makes the AI more useful for real work instead of just general queries.
The app also supports creative use cases. Users can generate images and videos directly from the desktop, making it useful for designers and content creators as well.
The app is built using Swift, which means it is designed specifically for macOS. This should help it run smoothly and feel more integrated with the system compared to web-based tools.
The Gemini app is now available globally for macOS 15 and above. Google is offering it for free to all users for now.
