After years of speculation, Tesla is finally making its official entry into India. The company dropped a “Coming Soon” poster on X handle with a clear nod to “India.” The post has reignited excitement among Indian Tesla fans who have waited for this moment for a long time.
Tesla’s first showroom in India will open in Mumbai’s upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), also known as the city’s business and finance hub. Invitations for the launch event, scheduled for July 15, have already gone out. The invite calls it the “Launch of Tesla in India,” which makes the company’s intentions loud and clear.
According to reports, Tesla has already shipped its first batch of vehicles in India from its plant in China. These vehicles are believed to be Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs. These initial imports could help the company test market response before making any deeper commitment to the Indian market.
To support its early operations, Tesla has taken 24,565 square feet of warehouse space on lease in Lodha Logistics Park, Mumbai. This signals a serious logistical setup, not just a trial run.
On Friday, Tesla received a trade certificate from the Andheri RTO. This gives it the green light to display cars, offer test drives, and even initiate sales. The certificate was issued to Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited and is valid for five years. This clears one of the major regulatory hurdles and paves the way for a smoother rollout.
The certificate was granted under section 35 of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, allowing Tesla to legally operate unregistered vehicles for display, test drives, and delivery runs.
