Amazon has announced that it will shut down the Freevee app in August 2025. Users of the free, ad-supported streaming service are now being asked to switch to Prime Video to continue watching their favorite content. Freevee content will be available even without a subscription.

An in-app message to users says, “Prime Video is the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies, and Live TV. The Freevee app will be accessible until August 2025.”

Amazon already confirmed in November 2024 that it planned to shut down Freevee and move everything to Prime Video. At the time, the company said it was dropping the Freevee branding and shifting all its free content to Prime Video.

This move is part of Amazon’s plan to simplify its streaming services. Instead of managing two apps, Amazon wants to bring everything under one roof. It makes things easier for viewers and gives Amazon a single platform to grow its audience.

Freevee was launched in 2019 as IMDb TV and was rebranded to Freevee in 2022. It was available in the U.S., U.K., Germany, and Austria.

When Amazon launched IMDb TV to offer free streaming, I was surprised it wasn’t part of Prime Video from the start. Amazon could have simply allowed free content inside Prime Video without needing a separate app. But the company wanted to compete directly with free streaming platforms like Pluto TV and Tubi. Now, it’s doing exactly what it should have done back then.

Amazon made a similar move in India with the launch of miniTV. This was another confusing decision. Instead of offering free videos via Prime Video, Amazon added a video section inside its e-commerce app. Later, when it acquired MX Player, I thought the content would finally move to Prime Video. But instead, it merged MX Player with miniTV to launch Amazon MX Player.

Sooner or later, I believe Amazon MX Player will also be merged with Prime Video. Let’s just wait and see.
