Amazon today confirmed that it has acquired free OTT platform MX Player. It is also merging MX Player with Amazon miniTV to launch a new streaming platform Amazon MX Player. Amazon MX Player is an ad-supported video-on-demand service that will offer content across genres and languages.
“Today, we are bringing together the vast reach of MX Player, with the advertising tech that leverages Amazon’s billions of customer signals,” said Girish Prabhu, Head of Amazon Advertising India.
It is also worth noting that Amazon has not completely acquired MX Player, but only some of its assets
According to the company, MX Player and miniTV had over 250 million combined unique users in September So, Amazon MX Player is already one of the largest streaming services in India.. MX Player’s extensive library of content complements Amazon’s existing offerings. The merger will provide users with a large portfolio of content for Indian viewers. The content library includes originals and hit shows like Aashram, Dharavi Bank, Campus Diaries, Physicswallah, and Yeh Meri Family. Users also get access to Korean, Mandarin, and Turkish shows dubbed in Hindi and other regional languages.
Amazon confirmed that it will continue to invest in originals and returning seasons of popular shows to keep viewers entertained.
MX Player was launched as a video player by a South Korean app developer. In 2018, it was acquired by Times Internet for $140 million. Times Internet relaunched the app as an ad-supported video streaming app. Now it has sold MX Player to Amazon.
