Apex Legends Mobile first impressions

Apex Legends Mobile

After a year of waiting since the first beta, Apex Legends Mobile is finally here. Till now, the game has been in short regional tests. Players have participated in the beta and provided the necessary feedback for the good of the game. Now that all the changes are completed, the game has formed its final shape.

So, let us talk about what the final shape is.

The game was released on the 17th of May on iOS and Android. Soon after the launch, Apex Legends became the most downloaded iOS game ever. It was all because the game offers the core mechanics and splendid graphics for a mobile game.

Gameplay

This game is a hero-based battle royale that offers a wide range of core mechanics and scope to master. Players form three-man squads to fight other trios in the pursuit to be the best. Different heroes or Legends have different abilities equipped to assist their teammates for the glory. Legends are categorized into four different classes, Support, Recon, Offensive, and Defensive. Each legend plays its part to help their team to climb up the ranks.

In the lobby, three players get a chance one by one to select their favorite legends. Players can request specific legends to perform to their best caliber. Among the players in a game, the system chooses the best trio which is known as the champion squad.

Like every other battle royale game, players are dropped from an airship to fight for victory. Upon landing, one has to open up supply boxes and roam around buildings to get the necessary weapons for the killing. As you proceed in the game and get kills you get rewarded the title of the Kill Leader. This title is given to those who have the highest kill count in that particular game.

The game offers cosmetics that can be obtained by playing the game. You can also pay for more premium in-game items. Apex Legends offers quality in-game items and titles which are a matter of great pride.

Global Version VS Beta Version

The beta phase of Apex Legends Mobile ran for over a year, and it was exciting to play. The game offered many agents, with ‘Wattson’ being the center attraction ( Wattson is not yet available in the global version ). The early phase of the game had the frame rates capped at 30 (India, Philippines), but as the game entered bigger markets (USA, Brazil) frame rates went as high as 90.

People who bought premium content in the beta phase of the game, are promised to be given back the resources with an extra 25 percent.

Player levels, titles, and skins all have been reset in the global version of the game. Players have to grind again for them. The global version did not meet my expectations. It comes with many bugs and is not as optimized as the beta version of it.

I run the game on OnePlus Nord. The beta version used to run at 60 fps with no lag (screen recording on) whereas the global version struggles to give me constant 40 fps. Also, aiming and gyroscope seem to be disturbed too. It feels laggy/crappy not as smooth as it was in the beta. Even Flagship devices like Samsung S22 have frame rates capped at 40. Only iPhone 12 and 13 are getting above 60 fps.

Audience Reaction

Players are not happy with this launch. There is lots of disappointment and misery among Apex Legends Mobile fans. Legends have taken Twitter to express their grief.  People expected more optimizations and better pings at the global launch, but that did not happen.

The devices which had Apex Legends Mobile running flawlessly started to freeze. Crashing of the game, and capped frame rates made the game displeasing for them. Another big reason for the gloomy reaction of the audience is unstable and high pings. Between gunfights, rubberbanding is a common issue now. Bullets do not register and enemies teleport. This all leads to a poor game experience. Due to all this, players are disheartened as the soft launch of Apex Legends seemed very promising.

People are requesting an update that addresses all these issues.

Content creators and local tournament admins are affected the most due to a lack of optimization which makes it a lot tougher to record or host tournaments.

Verdict

Apex Legends Mobile is a fine game and sets new benchmarks in the mobile gaming industry. Graphics, mechanics, and concepts are worth all the hype this game gets.

If you would like to try out this game, today might not be the best time, but I am sure with one or two updates it will be one of the best mobile games. I have enjoyed playing this game, and it is addicting. The only ‘turn-off this game has, is the frame rates cap and optimization. So, if you do not mind your game being played at 40 FPS you can give it a go.
