Epic Games acquires music platform Bandcamp

Epic Games has acquired the music platform Bandcamp. The financials of the deals were not disclosed by any of the companies.

Bandcamp has confirmed that the company will keep operating as a standalone marketplace. Nothing will change in the operations and users will see no difference. The company also promises to work with Epic to expand in more countries and push development forward.

“Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team. The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model,” the company said in a blog post.

Bandcamp is a music platform where artists sell their music directly to fans and earn 80-85% of the digital sales.

Bandcamp is the first acquisition of Epic outside of the gaming and tech space. I am not sure what is there in Epic’s mind. Gaming sounds are already big sellers on Bandcamp. Linking Bandcamp and Epic Store will surely be an interesting move.
