Yesterday, Internet users in India found that searching for “ugliest language in India” in Google returns Kannada as an answer. It sparked an outrage and the Karnataka government also threaten to send a legal notice to the search giant.
Google quickly removed the result and also apologised to the people saying that search results don’t reflect company’s opinions about anything.
“The search isn’t always perfect. Sometimes, the way content is described on the internet can yield surprising results to specific queries,” Google said in a media statement.
Karnataka’s Minister for Kannada, Culture, and Forest, Mr. Aravind Limbavali tweeted a series of tweets demanding an apology from Google India.
He has also directed the Kannada & Culture secretary to issue a notice to Google.
Kannada is said to be 2500 years old language making it one of the oldest languages. Showing it ‘Ugliest’ was wrong. Google fetches results from different websites. There was a website where Kannada was described as the Ugliest language and Google displayed what it found. Google isn’t fully at fault.
This isn’t the first time when Google’s search results sparked an outrage. Google once showed Narendra Modi as a result while searching for “World’s Most Stupid Prime Ministers.”
