Google recently launched Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL smartphones at an event in New York. These new phone won’t support Google’s DayDream. Later Google confirmed to a few media houses that it will soon stop selling Daydream View mobile headset.
Google will continue to support the app that works on older phones.
“There hasn’t been the broad consumer or developer adoption we had hoped, and we’ve seen decreasing usage over time of the Daydream View headset,” a spokesperson said.
Google launched DayDream View alongside the Pixel phones in 2016. Later, it was supported by several other smartphones over the years. No phones released in 2019 supports DayDream. It shows that not just developers, but smartphone manufacturers have also stopped taking interest in this project.
Not just DayDream, but Google Clips has also been removed from the Google Store. Clips was an action camwera without a viewfinder. It uses AI to decide what moments are important to capture. The device didn’t get much attention. It also got bad reviews from reviwers across differnet publications for bad image quality and videos without sound.
Google keeps on experimenting in new segments and stops going further if doesn’t get enough users. It has axed several products recently due to lack of enough active users. Google Stadia is one of such experiments it launched recently to bring cloud gaming. It will be interesting to see how long Google can go.
