GTA 6 Extended Look Reveals Just How Ambitious Rockstar’s Biggest Game Really Is

Rockstar Games has finally pulled back the curtain on Grand Theft Auto VI with a nearly 27-minute Extended Look. It gave players the clearest picture yet of what to expect when the game arrives on November 19, 2026. Captured entirely from the PlayStation 5 version, the footage goes beyond the polished glimpses shown in previous trailers and shows how Jason, Lucia and the world of Leonida actually work together.

The biggest takeaway is that Rockstar is not simply building a larger version of GTA V. GTA 6 appears designed around a much more reactive world where characters, vehicles, police, missions and everyday activities interact with each other.

Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos remain at the centre of the game. Unlike GTA V, which divided its story between three protagonists, GTA 6 focuses on two characters and puts their relationship at the heart of the experience. Players can switch between Jason and Lucia, including during situations where they are working together. When they are apart, the transition takes longer, while switching between them is much faster when they are in the same situation.

This also changes how missions can play out. The footage shows the pair working together during robberies and escapes, with one character able to drive while the other fights or handles another part of the situation. The inactive character is not simply waiting for the player to switch back. The AI can continue helping during encounters.

Rockstar is also giving players more freedom between major story missions. Jason and Lucia can participate in a wide range of activities across Leonida, including racing, basketball, scuba diving, boating, base jumping and other recreational activities. These are not presented as disconnected mini-games. They are part of the larger world Rockstar is building around its characters.

The Extended Look also shows that GTA 6 is paying much more attention to what happens when players commit a crime. The wanted system has been expanded, with the six-star system returning, while police encounters appear to involve more than simply spawning increasingly powerful enemies. The game can track suspects and respond to crimes in ways that make escaping feel more like a process than a countdown.

Vehicle theft has received a similar treatment. Stealing a car is more interactive, with different approaches to getting inside vehicles. This fits into a wider change in how Rockstar handles vehicles. Cars are no longer just transportation between missions. Driving, racing, stealing and damaging vehicles are all becoming more important parts of the game’s systems.

Combat is another area where GTA 6 looks considerably different from its predecessor. The footage shows improved movement, cover-based shooting, more fluid transitions and the ability to move around vehicles and obstacles during fights. Rockstar is also bringing more detailed reactions to combat, making encounters feel less like two groups of characters standing in fixed positions and exchanging gunfire.

The world itself may be the most impressive part of the reveal. Vice City is only one part of Leonida, with Rockstar showing beaches, highways, smaller communities, rural areas and different environments surrounding the city. Underwater locations are also considerably more detailed, with wildlife and environmental elements visible beneath the surface.

NPCs are getting a major upgrade as well. Pedestrians and other characters appear to have more varied behaviour, reactions and interactions with their surroundings. Rockstar is clearly trying to make Leonida feel populated by people who are doing things rather than simply walking around to fill empty streets. Some of the smaller interactions shown in the footage, including characters reacting to activities and animals, help sell this idea.

Character appearance is also more dynamic. The footage suggests that players will have more influence over how Jason and Lucia look, while activities such as exercise can affect their physical appearance. This is not a completely new idea for GTA, but Rockstar appears to be integrating it more naturally into the wider character system.

The Extended Look also gives a better idea of how Rockstar is approaching mission design. Robberies, police encounters, private security work and other jobs can involve different stages and roles for Jason and Lucia. Disguises and different approaches can also play a role, suggesting that some missions will offer more flexibility instead of forcing players through a single sequence of actions.

There is also a clear influence from Red Dead Redemption 2 in the way GTA 6 handles movement and the world. Characters move more naturally, environments have more physical detail and small interactions appear to matter more. Rockstar seems to be taking the systemic approach it developed in Red Dead Redemption 2 and applying it to a modern crime sandbox.

The technical achievement is difficult to ignore. Rockstar says the Extended Look was captured entirely from in-game footage running on a standard PlayStation 5. The footage shows dense crowds, detailed interiors, large environments, advanced lighting, reflections, water effects and highly detailed characters while maintaining the scale expected from a GTA game.

What makes the reveal interesting is that Rockstar did not need to spend the entire presentation explaining individual features. Much of the information comes naturally from watching the world operate. A police chase demonstrates the wanted system. A robbery demonstrates character switching. A drive through Vice City demonstrates the density of the environment. A trip into the water demonstrates the level of detail beneath the surface.

That is perhaps the strongest message from the Extended Look. GTA 6 is not trying to impress players with one revolutionary mechanic. Rockstar is combining dozens of smaller systems to make Leonida feel more alive and unpredictable.
