Twitter is known for its 140 character tweets. So, you are bound to express yourself in just 140 characters. But, this will change soon because the company is thinking to extend this limit to 240 characters.

Twitter is now testing the larger 280 character limit with selected users. It wants to see users’ reaction for longer tweets.

Long Tweets

Twitter thinks that the character limit is the major cause of frustration for people tweeting in English. It also confirms that 9 percent of all tweets today is exactly 140 characters. Users have to edit their initial thoughts to get them under the limit. So, there is a need of removing this character limit.

Recently, it stopped counting usernames in the tweets. That gave users few extra characters in tweets.

Back in 2015, it was also rumored that Twitter was thinking to increase limit up to 10000 characters but it never happened.

Twitter has been struggling and its growth is slow. It has not added as many new users as it expects. So, the company thinks that increasing the tweet limit can help it to attract new users who don’t use Twitter just for its 140 character limit.
