At Google I/O, Google unveiled the latest version of Android called Android L. It seems to be the most ambitious update of Android. Google has also announced the developer preview of Android L which will be available to download later today.
Android L is the complete re-invention of Android with latest design. Google calls this new colorful design “Material Design.” Material Design actually represents the new look and feel for Google’s platform.
“We imagined… what if pixels didn’t just have color, but also depth? What if there was a material that could change its texture? This lead us to something we call ‘material design,” says Matias Durate, Director of Android operating system User Experience at Google I/O event.
In this Android version, Google focused on Design and performance. So, future Android apps will have better performance and improved battery life. Google also claims that this newer version will come with better malware protection. Google will also push more OS updates including security patches to Google Play services.
Android L brings various changes including refreshed status bar, dialer and cool transition animations. Notifications have been enhanced and are now available on lock screen. Chrome browser has also been updated with better fluid design and other UI changes. Performance of Chrome has also been improved.
Google has also introduced the Project Volta for better battery performance. There is a new Battery Saver mode which can tune your CPU for consuming less power.
