The “Offload Unused Apps” feature on iPhones and iPads is an intelligent storage management feature designed to help users save space by automatically removing apps that are rarely used. However, it sometimes cause unexpected inconveniences. For example, I rarely use Uber but whenever I want to book a Uber, I need to install the app because my iPhone automatically offloads the app. It becomes irritating when mobile data isn’t working well. In this article, I will explain the feature, how it is useful and how to disable it.
What Is “Offload Unused Apps”?
“Offload Unused Apps” is a feature that automatically removes apps you haven’t used in a while, especially when your device is running low on storage. The feature doesn’t delete the app’s data. When you reinstall the app, your data and settings will still be available as long as they are stored in iCloud or on your device.
How It Works:
- When storage is low, the system identifies apps that haven’t been used recently.
- These apps are removed to free up space.
- Their icons remain on your home screen, marked with a small cloud icon. Tapping the icon reinstalls the app from the App Store.
If you own an iPhone with limited storage, like a 64GB, the feature can make space for essential things like photos, videos, or updates. Since the feature keeps app’s data, you can pick up where you left off after reinstalling the app. As you don’t need to manual manage your storage., it removes the hassle.
Although the feature is helpful, it becomes irritating sometimes. You may find an app missing just when you need it the most and you need to wait for the reinstallation. Reinstallation requires a stable internet connection. If you are at a place where mobile data is slow, it becomes frustrating.
How to Turn Off “Offload Unused Apps”
If you prefer to manage your apps manually or avoid the inconveniences mentioned above, you can turn this feature off. Here are the steps.
Open the Settings App on your iPhone. Scroll down and select App Store. Under the Offload Unused Apps section, you will find a toggle switch. Disable the feature to turn it off.

Once disabled, your apps will no longer be offloaded automatically.
The choice depends on your storage habits if you want to keep this feature enabled or disabled. Keep it On if you frequently run out of space and don’t mind occasional app reinstallation. Turn it Off if you prefer full control over your apps or if you have ample storage.
