When you are working on your Mac, the clock at the top right usually just shows hours and minutes. For most people, that is good enough. But sometimes, you might want to track time more precisely, down to the second. Let us say there is an online deal or ticket booking that starts exactly at 2:00:00 PM. If your Mac only shows the time as 2:00, you will not know if you are early, late, or right on time. That one-second difference could be the reason you get the deal — or miss out.

There are more situations where this can help:

  • Tracking live events like product launches or livestream countdowns. You can join exactly when it begins.
  • Staying perfectly in sync during global team meetings. You know when to join.
  • Trying to post something at a specific second for fun or pattern (like 11:11:11)

The good news is that macOS lets you display seconds in the menu bar clock. You just need to turn on the setting manually.

Here is how to do it:

Steps to Show the Time with Seconds on Your Mac

  1. Open System Settings
  2. In the left sidebar, click on Control Center
  3. On the right side, scroll down and click Clock Options
  4. Turn on the toggle for Display the time with seconds

That is it. Now your clock will show hours, minutes, and seconds — right on the top of your screen.

If you also want to switch between the 12-hour and 24-hour format, go to:
System Settings > General > Date & Time

Adding seconds to your clock may seem like a small change, but it can help in surprising ways, especially when you care about perfect timing. Whether it is for productivity, precision, or just personal preference, it is a handy option that macOS already gives you.

Try it out and see if it makes a difference in your day.
