Bose has acquired Skullcandy in a move that could help the premium audio company reach more consumers through a brand known for its lifestyle-focused headphones and earbuds. The deal brings two established audio brands under the same ownership, but both will continue to operate under their existing names.
Bose said the acquisition will help expand its consumer audio portfolio and bring its audio technology and research together with Skullcandy’s product design and community-focused branding. The companies have not disclosed the financial terms of the deal.
The acquisition follows a multi-year collaboration between the two companies. That partnership appears to have provided a foundation for the deal, although neither company has shared details about the business results that led to the acquisition.
Bose CEO Lila Snyder said the company wants to reach more consumers by expanding its portfolio of brands alongside its technology partnerships. She described Skullcandy as an established brand with opportunities to develop new products and reach more customers worldwide.
Skullcandy CEO Brian Garofalow also described the acquisition as a positive development for the brand and its customers.
Bose is known for its noise-cancelling headphones, premium speakers and audio technology. Skullcandy, meanwhile, has built its identity around colourful designs, lifestyle products and a younger consumer audience.
The acquisition gives Bose a way to expand beyond its traditional premium positioning without having to build a separate lifestyle brand from scratch. Skullcandy already has its own identity and customer base, which Bose can use to reach buyers looking for more affordable and style-focused audio products.
Keeping the two brands separate also makes business sense. Bose can continue to target consumers looking for premium audio experiences, while Skullcandy can retain its existing identity. However, it remains unclear whether the acquisition will lead to shared technology, new product categories or changes to Skullcandy’s pricing.
Bose has not announced any immediate changes to Skullcandy’s products or operations. More details about the companies’ plans, including how they intend to combine their strengths, are expected to become clearer over time.
