Grand Theft Auto VI will not launch at the same time everywhere. According to regional PlayStation Store listings, the PS5 version will roll out across 15 launch windows, with the first players getting access almost 19 hours before the final regions.

The first players will be in New Zealand, where GTA 6 is scheduled to unlock at midnight local time on November 19. The rollout will then move across different regions before reaching Mexico and parts of Central America roughly 19 hours later. The listings cover 63 countries and regions.

That means GTA 6 will still officially release on November 19 worldwide, but there will be a huge gap between the first and last players getting access.

India is relatively early in the rollout. The PlayStation Store currently lists GTA 6 for 12:00 AM IST on November 19, which is 7.5 hours after the first New Zealand unlock.

Here’s the full list of regions, ordered from the earliest to the latest unlock time.

  • New Zealand
  • Australia
  • Japan, South Korea
  • Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan
  • Indonesia, Thailand
  • India
  • UAE
  • Saudi Arabia, Turkey
  • Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Greece, Romania, South Africa, Ukraine
  • Central Europe
  • UK, Ireland, Iceland, Portugal
  • Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay
  • Bolivia
  • US, Canada
  • Mexico, Central America

A staggered midnight launch is not unusual. Publishers have been using local-time releases for years. But GTA 6 is a different situation.

This is one of the biggest game launches ever, and the moment players in New Zealand get access, the internet will likely fill with screenshots, gameplay clips and story details. By the time players in the US and parts of Europe start playing, thousands of people could already be several hours into the game.

For anyone who wants to experience GTA 6 without knowing anything about its story, characters or missions, avoiding spoilers could become surprisingly difficult.

Rockstar has already been extremely protective of GTA 6 information following the massive 2022 leak. It would be ironic if the biggest spoiler problem on launch day comes not from another leak, but from the official release schedule.

Rockstar appears to be using local midnight launches rather than one global unlock time. This gives players a familiar release experience and avoids forcing most of the world to wait for a single UTC launch time.

But for a game like GTA 6, a simultaneous worldwide release would arguably make more sense.

Rockstar knows how much attention the game is going to receive. The recent GTA 6 Netflix Extended Look has already generated huge interest, and the game has become big enough to influence the release schedules of other major titles.

A single global launch would have created a cleaner moment for Rockstar and, more importantly, would have given players around the world the same experience.

There was another interesting decision around the GTA 6 launch. Rockstar is not shipping a traditional physical disc. The physical edition will come in a box, but it will contain a download code instead of a disc. Rockstar says the code will allow players to pre-load the game, with pre-loading starting November 12.

When this was revealed, it was easy to speculate that Rockstar wanted tighter control over the launch. Without physical discs being shipped to retailers and players, there is less chance of someone getting a copy early and leaking gameplay before release. It could also have made a simultaneous worldwide launch easier to manage.

But that second assumption clearly did not happen. GTA 6 will still have different regional unlock times, despite the physical version effectively being a digital copy in a box.

Of course, Rockstar never said the no-disc decision was specifically made to prevent leaks or enable a global launch. It could simply be part of Rockstar’s move toward digital distribution, while the download code also makes pre-loading possible.

Still, the timing makes the speculation interesting. Rockstar has removed one traditional source of pre-release leaks, but some players will still have almost 19 hours to play GTA 6 before others can even start.

The New Zealand launch could also encourage some players to look for ways to access GTA 6 early by using a New Zealand PlayStation account.

Current information suggests that this may work for digital purchases, but GTA 6 download codes have regional restrictions, so simply changing the console region will not necessarily unlock the game early.

This will probably lead to plenty of discussions around the so-called “New Zealand trick” as launch day gets closer.

The staggered release is not going to be a major issue for everyone. If you simply want to play GTA 6 at your local midnight, you will get access as expected.

The bigger issue is social media.

Someone playing in New Zealand can spoil a mission for someone in the US within seconds. A screenshot or short gameplay clip can spread across X, YouTube, Reddit and other platforms long before the game unlocks in later regions.

For a game as heavily anticipated as GTA 6, a simultaneous worldwide release would have been the cleaner approach.

Rockstar may have practical reasons for choosing local launch times, but the 19-hour gap creates a spoiler window that could have been avoided.

So, if you want to experience GTA 6 completely blind, staying away from social media on launch day might be your best option.
