Mojang has officially updated the system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition for the first time in years. The biggest change is the recommended RAM, which has increased from 4GB to 16GB. The update comes as the company prepares to move the game from OpenGL to the modern Vulkan graphics API.

The company says the old system requirements no longer reflect what Minecraft needs today. Over the years, the game has received bigger worlds, new features, and several technical improvements. Mojang believes it is time to update the hardware recommendations so players know what they need for a smooth experience.

The new recommended configuration targets 1080p gaming at 60 FPS using the Fancy graphics preset. It now recommends 16GB of system RAM, an Intel Core i5-12400, AMD Ryzen 5 5600, or Apple M2 Pro processor. On the graphics side, Mojang recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060, AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT, Intel Arc A580, or equivalent GPU with at least 6GB of VRAM.

The minimum requirements have also increased. Players now need 8GB of RAM with a dedicated graphics card or 12GB if using integrated graphics. Mojang says systems with integrated graphics need more memory because the GPU shares system RAM instead of having its own dedicated video memory.

One important thing to note is that Minecraft itself does not need 16GB of RAM. The recommendation is for the entire PC, including Windows, the Minecraft Launcher, background apps, and the game itself. Minecraft: Java Edition typically uses around 4GB, while the remaining memory is available for the operating system and other software.

The updated requirements are closely linked to Minecraft’s transition to Vulkan. The game started introducing Vulkan support with update 26.2 and will gradually replace OpenGL in the coming weeks. Vulkan is expected to improve performance, support modern graphics features, and provide a better foundation for future updates, including the upcoming Vibrant Visuals improvements.

Mojang also clarified that players with older PCs can still launch Minecraft in many cases. However, the company no longer guarantees a smooth experience on hardware that falls below the new minimum requirements. Older graphics cards that do not support Vulkan may also lose compatibility as the transition is completed.

While the jump from 4GB to 16GB may look surprising, it mainly reflects how much PC hardware has changed over the last decade. Most modern gaming PCs already come with 16GB of RAM, and Mojang says the updated requirements are meant to set realistic expectations rather than make the game harder to run.
