Publisher Wired Productions and developer Caged Element have confirmed that Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles on May 21. The game will be available as a digital release on both platforms. A physical edition is also planned, but only for PlayStation 5, and it will arrive later on July 16.
The game originally launched in Early Access on PC via Steam on August 6, 2024. After several updates and improvements, it received its full release on May 22, 2025.
Now, with the console launch, the game is set to reach a much wider audience.
Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks is not a traditional racing game. It mixes high-speed racing with heavy combat, all set in the chaotic Warhammer universe. Players race and customize buggies, tanks, and even helicopters. They can use powerful weapons during races, unlock new gear, upgrade gears, and built or share custom maps. The game focuses heavily on action. It is less about clean racing lines and more about destruction, speed, and chaos
The game offers multiple modes, both solo and multiplayer. One of the main modes is Deff Rally, an 8v8 combat race where players fight while racing to the finish line. Speed and aggression both play an important role here. Another mode, Kill Konvoy, is more tactical. Teams must defend their massive Stompa vehicle while trying to destroy the enemy’s one. This mode adds a strategic layer to the gameplay.
Each vehicle behaves differently, which means players need to adapt their playstyle depending on what they choose.
One of the standout features is the Creation Workshop. So, players can build custom tracks and battle arenas. They can create maps solo or with friends, and they can share it with the community.
The console release is an important step for the game. Although the game has interesting ideas, its performance on PC tells a different story. As per Techlomedia’s Steam chart data, it had an all-time peak of 2,719 back in August 2024, and now it hardly touches 50 concurrent players mark. These numbers are extremely low for a multiplayer-focused game.
It is important to note that multiplayer games often perform better on consoles due to a larger casual audience. The Warhammer brand also has a strong fan base, which could help bring in new players.
However, the challenge remains the same. If the game cannot retain players, even a console launch may not be enough.
