YouTube is expanding the features of its Premium Lite subscription in India. The company has confirmed that background play and offline downloads are now coming to the service. The rollout has already started, and YouTube says that all Premium Lite subscribers in India should receive these features in the coming weeks.

Premium Lite was introduced as a cheaper alternative to the full YouTube Premium subscription. Until now, the plan mainly offered ad-free viewing on most videos, but it lacked some of the key features that many users expect from a paid YouTube plan.

Now, Premium Lite subscribers will soon be able to play videos in the background and download videos for offline viewing. So, users can continue listening to a video even when they switch to another app or lock their phone. They will also be able to download videos and watch them later without an internet connection.

However, there is still an important limitation. These features will apply to most videos, but not all content. YouTube says that users who want completely ad-free viewing across all videos, including music content, along with full background play and downloads, will still need the regular YouTube Premium subscription.

YouTube says that the change came after feedback from users. Last year, the company expanded the Premium Lite pilot to more regions and many subscribers asked for background play and downloads to be added. These features are considered essential for a paid video service, especially for people who use YouTube as a music or podcast platform.

Without background play, many users saw little reason to subscribe because free users could already watch videos with ads.

In markets like India, price plays a big role in subscription decisions. YouTube Premium is relatively affordable compared to many other countries, but many users still prefer a cheaper option if they only want to remove ads. Premium Lite fills that gap. It targets users who mainly watch regular videos, such as tech reviews, tutorials, podcasts, or vlogs, and do not care much about the music features.

This update may also be part of YouTube’s larger strategy to push more users toward paid subscriptions. Over the past few years, YouTube has increased the number and frequency of ads on the free version. At the same time, it has been experimenting with different subscription tiers. Premium Lite appears to be an attempt to capture users who are not ready to pay for the full Premium experience.

By gradually improving the Lite plan, YouTube can attract a larger group of subscribers while still keeping the full Premium plan attractive with additional benefits like ad-free music and access to YouTube Music Premium.
