ASUS has officially announced the ROG Kithara, its first gaming headset to use planar magnetic drivers. The headset is part of the Republic of Gamers lineup and has been developed in partnership with HIFIMAN, a company well known for its high-end planar magnetic headphones.
The ROG Kithara uses custom 100mm planar magnetic drivers tuned specifically for ROG. Unlike regular dynamic drivers, planar magnetic drivers move evenly across the surface, which helps reduce distortion. ASUS claims a very wide frequency range from 8Hz to 55kHz. This should result in deeper bass, cleaner mids, and more detailed highs, especially during fast-paced games with lots of sound effects.
It features open-back structure. The open-back design allows sound to flow more naturally. This helps create a wider sound stage and better separation between different sounds. For gaming, this can improve spatial awareness, making it easier to tell where footsteps, gunshots, or other in-game sounds are coming from.
For voice chat, the headset includes an on-cable full-band MEMS boom microphone. It supports a wide 20Hz to 20kHz frequency range, which is higher than most standard gaming mics. ASUS has also separated the audio and microphone signal paths in the cable to reduce crosstalk. A higher signal-to-noise ratio should help keep voices clear while cutting down background noise.
The ROG Kithara comes with a high-quality cable that supports swappable plugs. Users get a 4.4mm balanced plug for use with DACs and amplifiers, along with 3.5mm and 6.3mm single-ended plugs for PCs, gaming consoles, and other devices. ASUS also includes a USB-C to dual 3.5mm adapter for laptops and mobile devices.
The headset features a metal frame and a strong hinge design. The adjustable headband is designed to fit different head sizes, while memory foam padding helps reduce pressure during long sessions. ASUS is also providing multiple earcup options, including leatherette, fabric, and velour, so users can choose what feels best. The open-back design also improves airflow, which can make extended use more comfortable.
ASUS has not yet shared pricing or availability details.
