Reddit users may soon have to pay to access certain subreddits, as the company explores new ways to monetize its platform. During a recent AMA (Ask Me Anything) session, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman confirmed that paid subreddits are in the works and could launch as early as 2025.

When asked about the development of paid subreddits, Huffman stated, “It’s a work in progress right now, so that one’s coming.” He later confirmed that paid subreddits are among the new features Reddit is planning for 2025.

We still have no details on how this feature would work, but it shows how the company is planning to boost its revenue. The platform already offers a premium-only subreddit called r/lounge, and it also rewards some users for contributions through the Reddit Contributor Program.

Reddit has been actively seeking new revenue streams since going public in 2024. The company has signed licensing deals with tech giants like OpenAI and Google to provide them access to Reddit content for AI training and data analysis. Additionally, Reddit’s new “Reddit Answers” chatbot leverages user-generated content to provide automated responses.

Paid subreddits would be a more direct approach to monetization. So, users will contribute not only content but also revenue. It will also be interesting to see how many users pay for premium communities.
