EA Motive’s long-awaited Iron Man game has finally made an unexpected return after years of silence. Around two and a half minutes of gameplay footage from the upcoming Marvel game has leaked online, offering the first substantial look at what the studio has been building since the project was announced in 2022.

The leaked footage appears to come from a recent development build and is marked “AUG26 TEST.” It is clearly not finished footage, but it shows several important parts of the game, including Iron Man flying through a large city, fighting enemies in the air and on the ground, using different weapons and interacting with his collection of suits.

There was initially some uncertainty about whether the footage was genuine, but EA has now confirmed it. The official Marvel’s Iron Man account acknowledged the leak on X, saying the reveal “didn’t go as planned” and that the team has “a lot more to show” when it is ready. EA has not announced an official reveal date or release window yet.

The footage gives us a good idea of how Motive is approaching Iron Man. Flight appears to be one of the most important gameplay mechanics, with Tony moving rapidly through a large environment and switching between aerial movement and ground combat. The speed looks impressive, and the ability to quickly take off, land and return to the air could make movement a major part of combat rather than simply a method of travelling between missions.

Combat also appears to make extensive use of Iron Man’s abilities. The footage shows repulsor attacks, rockets, lasers and the iconic chest beam, along with close-range attacks that allow Tony to grab and throw enemies. This suggests that players will have several ways to approach encounters instead of relying on a single attack type.

Another interesting part of the leak shows Tony surrounded by different Iron Man suits. He interacts with a system before an armor appears to reconfigure around him. While the footage does not explain the system, it could point toward suit customization and progression, allowing players to unlock or modify different armor and abilities as they progress through the game.

The leaked environments are also worth noting. Tony can be seen flying through what appears to be a large city, while other sequences show locations such as a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier and a bamboo forest. This does not confirm a fully open-world structure, but it suggests that Motive is creating larger spaces where Iron Man’s flight can actually be used. I would expect exploration and mission design to take advantage of that freedom rather than simply using flight as fast travel.

The footage also appears to confirm that the game will have a strong cinematic focus. Tony Stark is shown outside combat and interacting with other characters, while the game features its own interpretation of the Marvel universe rather than directly recreating the movies. The focus on Tony, his technology and his relationships also fits the single-player action-adventure experience EA originally announced.

I have been talking about the challenge of making a great Iron Man game for some time, including in my earlier article, Iron Man Has Everything a Great Game Needs. So What Went Wrong?. Iron Man looks like the perfect character for a game because of his flight, weapons, suits and massive range of abilities, but putting all of those things together into a consistently fun experience is much harder than it sounds.

That is why this leak has made me more optimistic about Motive’s project. The studio appears to understand that simply giving Tony Stark a few flying abilities would not be enough. The footage suggests that flight, combat and the suits are being designed as connected parts of the experience.

Based on what is shown, I expect the final game to focus heavily on aerial movement, large combat spaces, suit upgrades and cinematic missions. It could also allow players to approach encounters from different directions, using the environment and Iron Man’s mobility to their advantage. If Motive builds a strong progression system and gives players enough variety in missions, this could finally deliver the Iron Man experience that previous games struggled to achieve.

There is still a lot we do not know, including the size and structure of the world, the full progression system, the story and how much freedom players will have outside missions. The leaked footage is also from an unfinished build, so some mechanics and visuals can change before release.

Still, after years without meaningful updates, this is a much better look at EA Motive’s Iron Man game than fans have had so far. EA confirming the footage is real only makes it more interesting. Now the wait is for the official reveal, where Motive can show what the finished game is really capable of.
