OpenAI has today announced a major update to its AI chatbot, ChatGPT. ChatGPT Search is now accessible without requiring users to log in. This move allows anyone to access ChatGPT’s web-based responses while also viewing the sources that inform its answers.
Initially, the ChatGPT search was launched for paid subscribers in October and later rolled out to all users in December. With this latest change, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a direct competitor to traditional search engines like Google and Bing.
In addition to removing login requirements, OpenAI has also updated ChatGPT’s search interface to resemble a more traditional search engine. Users can now see maps, images of local attractions, and concise descriptions alongside their search results. This makes it easier to find relevant information quickly.
It is important to note that Perplexity recently allows users to search the web without an account. Perplexity also introduced an integration that pulls hotel ratings and information directly from TripAdvisor. This feature showcases how AI search is evolving beyond conventional text-based queries.
AI-powered search engines are gaining popularity, but it will be interesting to see how well they do compared to traditional search engines. It also shows how users’ interest is moving to AI tools.
