In response to growing concerns about online safety for minors, Meta has announced significant changes to its messaging platforms. Now Instagram and Facebook, Meta-owned platforms, will protect teens from unwanted messages by default.

Instagram and Messenger profiles of teens under the age of 16 (or 18 in certain regions) will now restrict messages from unwanted contacts by default. Anyone teens who don’t follow or are not connected won’t be able to send the DMs. Only people they are connected to on Instagram will be able to send them messages or add them to a group conversation. There was already a restriction that prevented adults over 19 from sending messages to minors who don’t follow them.

Stricter Message Settings for Teens on Instagram and Facebook

This new setting applies to all teens on the platform. Users will be notified of the updates through messages at the top of their feeds. Additionally, teens using supervised accounts will need explicit permission from the overseeing parent or guardian to alter these settings.

Stricter Message Settings for Teens on Instagram and Facebook

Meta claims that it is actively working on a new feature to protect teens from receiving inappropriate images in messages from individuals they are already connected with. This feature will shield teens from unsolicited content but also discourage the sending of such material in the first place.

I think the new update is a welcome move and addresses the concerns surrounding child safety on social media platforms. By enabling this default setting, Meta is taking a proactive approach to creating a safer online space for young users. Although the move is commendable, it is essential for social media companies to continually assess and adapt their strategies to address evolving threats.

Parents should also talk to their children and discuss the pros and cons of using social media. They should teach them the right way to use social media while keeping predators away.
