Apple is set to push iOS 17.2 update to the public. This update will bring support for next-generation Qi2 wireless charging to iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. Qi2 brings a Magnetic Power Profile similar to Magsafe. So, Qi2 devices will work the same way MagSafe chargers work.

The Magnetic Power Profile was introduced by Apple in MagSafe‌‌ charging. Now that it will be available with Qi2, iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 users will also be able to enjoy a MagSafe-like charging experience without paying premium for MagSafe chargers.

With Qi2 chargers, devices will get a charging speed of up to 15W. It means users will be able to charge their iPhones at a faster rate using wireless charging without using a Magsafe charger. However, it is not clear if iPhones will support faster wireless charging using a Qi2 wireless charger.

Even though iPhone 12 models are compatible with MagSafe charging, these models won’t get Qi2 support. So, iPhone 12 users will have to buy a MagSafe charger if they want to charge at 15W wirelessly.

Apple’s latest iPhone 15 series already supports Qi2 wireless charging. It is worth noting that Apple previously confirmed that the iPhone 15 series will support up to 15W Qi2 wireless charging, but the technical specifications page says support for up to 7.5W Qi2 wireless charging.

The iOS 17.2 update should be available this week or next. The update will also bring spatial video recording support in iPhone 15 Pro, a fix for iPhone 15 wireless charging issues in some car models, a Journal app, and the ability to change the default sound for notifications.
