Popular stranger chat platform Omegle is shutting down after 14 years of existence. Omegle lets users connect with random strangers and have text or video chat. During the pandemic, Omegle saw a surge in its users and we also saw several YouTubers creating content around the recordings of Omgele video calls.

If you visit Omegle, you will see a long message by founder Leif K-Brooks. He confirmed that operating Omegle is really stressful.

“As much as I wish circumstances were different, the stress and expense of this fight – coupled with the existing stress and expense of operating Omegle, and fighting its misuse – are simply too much. Operating Omegle is no longer sustainable, financially nor psychologically. Frankly, I don’t want to have a heart attack in my 30s,” said Leif K-Brooks.

Omegle was a good platform to connect with strangers but it also found it into several controversies. It also faced a few lawsuits and is facing increased scrutiny from regulators. As per a report on BBC, Omegle has been mentioned in more than 50 cases in the UK, US, and Australia.

All these legal cases are surely not easy to handle. Omegle is a platform where it doesn’t ask users to create an account. So, it is not easy to keep track of users and their activity.
