It has been around two years since we first heard that Steam for Chrome OS is in development. During the Google for Games Developer Summit, Greg Hartell, Google’s product director for games, unveiled the Steam for Chrome OS alpha program and confirmed that Steam alpha ‘just launched’ for select Chromebook.
When I checked the Chromebook community forum, I found a recent post that claims alpha version of Steam for Chrome OS for a small set of Chromebooks is coming soon. That means we still have to wait even if Greg Hartell said ‘Steam alpha just launched.’
To run Steam, you will need a Chromebook with good specs. It must have at least 11th gen Intel core i5 processor and a minimum of 7GB RAM. So, only select Chromebooks are left that can run Steam and support gaming. We also found a list of select Chrombooks that will support Steam at the launch.
Google and Valve has been working for a long time to bring Steam for Chrome OS. Now when they are releasing it in alpha, Google’s Chromebook is also ready to foray into gaming. Until now, Chromebooks are considered a productivity or educational laptops.
