Twitter is again into a big controversy. In a surprising move, the social media platform has removed the verified bade from the personal account of Vice President Venkaiah Naidu. The account has over 13 lakh followers, The official Twitter handle of the Vice President of India continues to have the blue tick.

After this news got attention, the IT ministry said to take appropriate action against Twitter if it fails to give any valid reason for this action.

We still do not know why Twitter removed the verification badge from Venkaiah Naidu’s account. But the account was inactive for six months and this may be the reason why it lost the verification badge. Venkaiah Naidu’s last tweet from his personal account was published on July 23, 2020.

Some users pointed that there are also several accounts that are inactive for a long time but continue to have a blue tick. For example, the account @AllIndiaBakchod (All India Backchod) is still a verified Twitter handle while the last activity from this account was on June 21, 2020, when it retweeted a Tweet by ZEE5Premium. This is the reason many people called out Twitter for its political biasedness.

Twitter’s verified badge lets people know that the Twitter account is authentic and represents a well-known organization, personality, influencer, or celebrity. Twitter’s policy says that the company may remove the verified badge from an account if the account becomes inactive or in longer in the position for which it was verified. It may also remove verified badges if an account is found to violate Twitter Rules.

Update: Twitter has now restored the verified badge of the account.
