Uber uses Googel Maps for its rides. Even if it is fine, Uber wants to reduce its dependency on Google Maps. It also tried to buy Here Maps, but couldn’t get success in finalizing the deal. Now, Uber is reportedly investing $500 million on its own mapping project.

Uber has mapping vehicles across the US and Mexico to gather data and images. Once, Uber has something for the US, it will plan for other countries.

“Existing maps are a good starting point, but some information isn’t that relevant to Uber, like ocean topography. There are other things we need to know a lot more about, like traffic patterns and precise pickup and dropoff locations. Moreover, we need to be able to provide a seamless experience in parts of the world where there aren’t detailed maps — or street signs,” Uber said in a blog post.

This mapping project started last year Uber says that street imagery captured by mapping cars will help them improve Uber experience. It will be able to offer ideal pick-up and drop-off points. It will also be able to offer best routes for riders and drivers.

It is worth to note that Google was an earlier investor in Uber, but both companies avoided working closely. Even they are working on the rival product that is a driverless car.

Uber’s own mapping project will also accelerate its autonomous cars which are already in the testing phase.
